Stay ahead of railhead contamination with the LPS Track Contamination Detector (TCD). Installed on any train bogie, it provides continuous, no-contact monitoring of track conditions for optimised cleaning operations.
Heatmap Your Network to Target Your Cleaning
The TCD improves track monitoring by detecting contamination levels across the network as trains operate. Its non-invasive design requires no modifications to tracks or circuits, making it easy to install and highly effective.
One Machine, Multiple Benefits
Continuous Monitoring
Detects contaminants like oil, rust, and leaf residue in real time.
Seamless Integration
Installs easily without track modifications or extra infrastructure.
Data-Driven Maintenance
Generates heatmaps of low-adhesion hotspots for informed decision-making.
Optimized Cleaning Operations
Optimizes cleaning schedules improve efficiency and reduce cleaning costs.
Post-Clean Validation
Confirms cleaning effectiveness and refines maintenance strategies.
Real-Time Network Assessment
Mounts to any train and continuously scans contamination levels across the network.
Identify problem areas before they cause disruptions. The TCD technology features an active loop sensor mounted between the wheelsets to measure the shunting resistance of the wheel-rail system. It detects contamination levels based on voltage changes, creating a heatmap of affected areas for precise maintenance planning.
The TCD has successfully passed workshop testing and is undergoing field trials in the U.S. It is currently at Technology Readiness Level 6-7, with the MTA Metro-North Railroad leading the first deployment.
By integrating TCD with LaserTrain or any other rail cleaning technology, operators can target treatments where they’re needed most, reducing wasted resources and improving cleaning efficiency. See how LaserTrain is making an impact in real-world rail networks.
The TCD allows us to create a heatmap with insights into problematic areas that we can use to tailor cleaning operations and maximize our suite of track cleaning systems.

The active loop sensor measures voltage changes in the wheel-rail interface to identify contaminants
What contaminants can it detect?
Rust, oil, leaf residue, and other debris that impact traction.
Does the TCD require track modifications?
No, it is a non-invasive, no-contact system that attaches to train bogies.
How does the TCD improve cleaning efficiency?
It pinpoints problem areas so that cleaning treatments are applied more efficiently.
Can it be used with LaserTrain?
Yes, the TCD enhances LaserTrain's effectiveness by providing real-time contamination data. It is also compatible with all rail cleaning solutions, including water jetting, sandite, and metal brush systems.
Is the TCD available for purchase?
Currently the TCD is undergoing field trials, with commercial availability planned in 2025.
