System Overview

Adaptable Rail Cleaning for Any Network

Whether you're operating in the EU, UK, or US, LaserTrain delivers consistent, high-performance rail cleaning through two proven models—Container and Retro-Fit. The system’s cleaning heads are mounted at track level for simultaneous dual-rail treatment, with all other components housed in a container or retrofitted car above. Explore both models below to see which best suits your network and operational needs.

Container Model

Housed in a 20-foot half-height container, the Container Model is a modular, self-contained unit engineered for seamless integration into standard rail networks across the EU, UK, and US. It can be mounted on Y25 bogeys (EU/UK) or R141 trucks (US) and complies with all relevant loading gauge guidelines. This is our fastest deployable option in the EU.

Retro Fit Model

A flexible solution for North American operators, the Retro-Fit Model converts decommissioned railcars into a fully functional LaserTrain with no further FRA approvals required post-install. Sized according to the donor car, it requires a GIS 70 truck and typically completes installation, testing, and approval within six months.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

What challenges does LaserTrain address for rail operators?
LaserTrain quickly removes contaminants with precision, reducing rail slippage and wear. This leads to a reduction in safety incidents related to slip-slide and signalling. Less frequent wheel-rail maintenance and disruptions due to track closures, delays and cancellations improve train scheduling and operations.
What advantages does the LaserTrain offer over traditional cleaning methods?
The effect of laser cleaning is more precise and longer lasting than traditional methods like water jetting. LaserTrain has no need to use chemicals or abrasive materials, and it’s damage free method works in sub-zero conditions where water is ineffective. It delivers fast, no-contact operations which reduces line closures and needs no trackside workers, enhancing overall rail safety and service.
How does LaserTrain’s value compare to traditional rail cleaning methods?
Traditional methods often require frequent maintenance, use of chemicals and other added products and manual labour leading to higher ongoing costs. LaserTrain’s precise cleaning reduces the frequency of maintenance and operational disruptions, offering greater value in the long run. The LaserTrain delivers maximum cost efficiency, with the total cost per mile decreasing as more miles are cleaned. This is due to most of the costs being fixed up front for hardware.
How long will it take to see a return on investment with LaserTrain?
ROI depends on the size and needs of your network, but many clients see significant savings in maintenance costs and operational efficiency within the first 1-2 years. Over the product’s lifespan, the savings typically exceed the initial investment.
How has the LaserTrain positively impacted rail operations?
Our real-world case studies and performance metrics from rail operators show significant improvements in safety, maintenance efficiency, and operational costs since implementing LaserTrain. In 2023, Metro-North Rail road received the APTA Gold Award for Rail Safety after successfully implementing LaserTrain cleaning during peak hours at 100 km/h.
How can rail operators assess the effectiveness of the LaserTrain's cleaning process?
LaserTrain's impact can be assessed through improved traction, a reduction in slip-slide incidents and delay times, enhanced braking distances and a decrease in train wheel maintenance costs over time.
How can the LaserTrain address scepticism or concerns about adopting new technology?
We understand that adopting new technology can raise concerns. LaserTrain's proven track record, successful trials, and positive impacts on operational efficiency offer reassurance to rail operators considering its adoption.
